Biblical Reflections - 5th February 2017

February 5, 2017

ISAIAH 58:7-10, 2 CORINTHIANS 2:1-5, MATTHEW 5:13-16

Matthew Chs.5-7 is called the “Charter of the Kingdom” because in them Jesus establishes the Christian code of conduct.  The verses in today’s Gospel, follow immediately after the Beatitudes. Pope Francis quotes Mt.5:13-16 as the definition of a true Christian.

Being the Salt and the Light is a tall order.  Salt, used as seasoning, it enhances flavor in food.  It also preserves. Through love and sacrifice, we, as Christians, need to enhance the quality of life in our neighbourhood, thereby preserving Christian values in the world.

Light expels darkness and gives direction.  A Christian life must be a beacon of light to all.  By the light of our words and deeds, we must show people the way that leads to Christ.  It would be useless if we are just outward followers of rules of Christianity (like going to Church without real interest, or saying the Rosary without meaning it), if our life does not reflect the values of Christ. We must lead by example.

Jesus is the way, the light and the truth, and it is to this that we must stand witness in our communities.  Just like a “City on the Hill” that cannot be hidden, we must stand tall - our lives reflecting love, service and forgiveness.  And when people see us, they will be amazed and give Glory to God!

So like Prophet Isaiah says in the 1st reading, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless poor.  This is how we become the true salt and the light of the world.

So how is your “seasoning”?  Are you leading by example? Is your light shining brighter for Jesus?
