The city of Caesarea Philippi was built near a gigantic wall of rock 200 feet high and 500 feet long. It is here that Jesus asks his disciples “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” The disciples answered “Elijah, Jeremiah, some other prophet.” Now Jesus put the same question to them “Who do you say I am?” Simeon Peter spoke up and said “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God”. And Jesus says :
You are blessed because this revelation was given to you directly by God.
You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church.
The gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven
Reflection: If Jesus was to ask me today “Who do you say I am?” What will be my answer? Will my answer be something that I have learnt in class /Church sermons? Will it be an answer from my heart drawn out of an experience with Jesus?
At my baptism I have been renamed as a disciple of Jesus. Do I feel blessed? Was it a mere ritual? Do I feel Jesus telling me that he wants me to help in building His church? What am I contributing to building the church by evangelizing, financial support, using my time and talents?
Do I accept the authority and teaching of the church as coming down from the successor of Peter – the Pope. Like the Psalmist let us pray “Lord your love is eternal, complete the work you have begun”.
