The Season of Creation, which runs from Sep 1 (Feast of Creation) to Oct 4 (Feast of St.
Francis of Assisi), has the 2024 theme of "Hope and Act with Creation". In line with this theme, the Environment Cell of Orlem (ECO), of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Malad undertook several initiatives.
The "Plant Swap", a unique initiative held on Sep 15, encouraged plant enthusiasts to
share/swap saplings, plant cuttings, seeds and even gardening tips. Rooted in the values of sharing and fellowship, the event fostered fun and camaraderie among participants.
The monthly dry waste collection held every third Sunday, for the last 3 years, is a
testament to the commitment to reduce carbon footprint by ensuring judicious recycling of waste.
The Beach Clean-up, organised on Sep 21, (International Coastal Clean-up Day), saw a
footfall of almost 80 participants, including school students and youth. The group collected plastic, debris, and other pollutants, with the aim of protecting marine life, preserving the environment and fostering community spirit.
Lastly, the team participated in a Tree Plantation drive, to plant native trees, to enhance
local ecosystems and also adopted a small patch on the Church grounds and converted it into a Kitchen Garden.
The activities were concluded with a special mass, celebrated by Fr. Cedric, who brought the community together in prayer and reflection about our responsibility towards Mother Nature. During the celebration the ECO members took a pledge to continue their work towards Creation and were felicitated with a sapling.
The Team, under the leadership of Fr. Clinton, undertook these little Acts of Creation, with the hope for a cleaner, greener and more sustainable environment.
